Jamis

Jamis Bicycles, is an American distributer of bicycles built primarily in the Peoples Republic of China. Jamis was acquired in 1990 by its parent company G. Joannou Cycles 1990 and is currently headed by Carine Joannou, CEO of G. Joannou Cycles since 1981.

History

In 1979, Florida based Jamis Bicycles introduces the Earth Cruiser. The Earth Cruiser was seen as a revolutionary design that contributed the entire beach cruiser movement. 1980, Jamis debuts the Boos Cruiser. Made to be the boss of all cruisers, it feature a double-diamond frame and a giant Cheeks saddle. Next Jamis launched its then named Boss Explorer comfort bicycle, in 1981. It was a middle ground bike that combined Jamis Florida friendly Boss Cruiser and the early mountain bikes that were surfacing this time on the west coast. 1983 was the launch of the Jamis Dakota, Jamis Lightfoot and the Jamis Roughneck. Truly remarkable, they were some of the highest quality mountain bikes of their time. The first Jamis Dakar was launched in 1985. It was launched as a
custom-build race-ready bicycle from the factory. Jamis states this bicycle is instrumental in forming Jamis credo to this day, no frills, quality parts and pure performance. The Dakar is still available to this day, however it has gone through many design iterations.

In 1988, Jamis Bikes introduced the Eclipse and Quest, their first entry into the road bike market. The Eclipse and Quest both feature innovative geometry that helped re-define how road bikes fit their riders. After launching their road bikes, in 1991, Jamis released the Coda and Tangier hybrid style bikes. They featured and upright seating position and skinny 700c road tires.

Jamis released the Dragon, its premium mountain bike, in 1993. That version featured a fillet-welded, hand-polished tube frame. With premium hardware like a Rock Shox front suspension fork, XTR drivetrain, and Ulegra Hubs, making for a light (sub 24 pound) bicycle, that was seen as a fantastic value. The Dragons success led to the release of the Dakar Team in 1995, Jamis first full suspension bike.

Jamis continued to modify their existing designs in the late 90s. The off-road Dragon and on-road Eclipse become the first American-made production bikes to feature Reynolds 853 tubing on their frames. In 1998, Jamis released the Diablo. The Diablo is significant at the industries first vacuum-resin-molded-carbon Monocoque frame. It was nominated for the most innovative products for 1998. Its Dakota mountain bike later won the Bike of the Year Award from Mountain Biking magazine. In 2000, Jamis wins Bike of the Year again for bicycles under $800 from Mountain Bike magazine with its Dakar Sport.

In the 2000s, Jamis continues to debut new models, such as the Nova, Dakar XTL, Coda Sport, Diablo 7x7 and the Xenith T series. 2009 marks Jamis Bikes 30 year anniversary; and Jamis overhauls its entire line.

Jamis Earth Cruiser Review

Jamis Earth Cruiser

The Jamis Earth Cruiser is everything a cruiser should be, along with a few improvements from old steel cruisers of times past. It is still fun, comfortable and stylish; but now it is made of a aluminum instead of steel. This makes for a much lighter, much more rustproof bike. The Earth Cruiser is available in either a one or three speed model, both with a coaster brake. I have nothing bad to say about the bike, it is an absolute blast to ride. The seat is squishy, the bars are wide and comfortable, and it’s sure to be one of the coolest looking bikes in town. I find it impossible to ride without a huge grin on my face. this bike is just the ticket for anything from a trip to the coffee shop to just cruisin’ the neighborhood.

Jamis Dragon Review

Jamis Dragon

The Jamis Dragon Team is Jamis’ highest end race hardtail. It is made of lightweight 853 Reynolds steel. After riding this bike for the last year and a half I am convinced that steel is real!

I doubt that I will ever go back to riding an aluminum bike ever again. The race geometry of the Dragon is long and low and designed for going fast, and go fast it does. This bike will shred singletrack with the best fo them. T he bike is really stable at high speeds and i feel totally confident throwing it into corners at breakneck speed. The 853 Reynolds steel that the Dragon is made of produces the most the most beautifully riding frame that I have ever pedaled. Read the rest of this entry »
